Today’s blog post discusses NetThing 2020, an event that Afilias Australia is proud to be sponsoring again, and that I am excited to be involved in organising along with a team of dedicated volunteers.
NetThing 2020
After a successful inaugural event in 2019, the NetThing community are coming together again — physically and virtually — on October 1-2 2020 for an inclusive, open discussion and debate surrounding issues of importance to the Australian internet community.
NetThing is a FREE event and everyone is invited to come along. The greater the turnout, the better balanced the discussion will be, so get involved, get inspired and have your say on the future of the internet in Australia!
The forum will be hosted online with physical hubs in Brisbane and Adelaide but regardless of where you are attending, we can assure you that there will be plenty of time for active engagement and group reflection.
NetThing is based around the principles of:
- Building a diverse and inclusive Internet community in Australia;
- Exploring national and international internet governance policy issues;
- Sharing technical expertise and policy understanding in a way that people with less technical experience can understand and relate to; and
- Acting as an apolitical and non-partisan forum advocating the benefits of the Internet and related services and technologies.

Come along to NetThing 2020 on October 1 and 2!
NetThing is the renewal of an annual forum to strengthen Australia’s Internet community, and provides the opportunity for robust Australia-based Internet policy exploration and discussion. The event supports an inclusive, open dialogue on issues of importance for all Australian internet users.
This year’s event will take place over two days, and can be attended either virtually, or at a physical hub in Adelaide or Brisbane.
NetThing 2020 will focus on 5 key themes:
- Policy - the intersection of society, economics, law, politics and the internet;
- Inclusion - creating an internet for everyone, and an internet community that is everyone;
- Technology - the technologies that build and use the internet;
- Security - cybersecurity, cybersafety, infrastructure protection, identity and financial protection, through the lens of the internet; and
- The future - speculative, fun, inspirational views of the future internet.
This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the future of Australian internet governance, and we are pleased to invite you to come along.
