This blog is designed to keep you informed about the technical upgrade portion of the .au Registry Transformation Project.
This post discusses the detailed planning and risk analysis that is going on between auDA and Afilias.
As progress towards the upgrade in June accelerates, auDA and Afilias have been meeting frequently to work out all the details of the transition. While regular meetings have occurred in Melbourne, auDA recently visited Afilias at its global technical center in Toronto to meet with the architects who are designing the new system for .au.
Bruce Tonkin, auDA’s Project Lead—Registry Transformation Project, met for two packed days with over 90 members of the Afilias transition team and conducted a thorough review of every possible risk element related to the upgrade scheduled for the end of June. This team is providing 24x7 support to our local Melbourne-based resources to ensure a secure, stable and reliable upgrade.
The Afilias transition team is comprised of technical professionals who are expert in all aspects of registry and DNS operations and technology. The transition team includes veterans of over twenty transitions beginning with the .org transition in 2002. This team has upgraded millions of domain names to improved technology – all while end users of those names just kept doing their thing – a “non-event”.
Of course, auDA is working hard to make sure that Afilias’ processes are going to work for the Australian market. This important visit was designed to discuss the detailed plans with auDA, review all of the project elements including any risk elements, and make sure that auDA had answers to detailed questions regarding how Afilias will make the transition secure and stable.
At the close of the meetings, it was clear that this upgrade program will be historic in its thoroughness and will result in the creation of a world-class internet infrastructure platform for the Australian internet community.
